The Benefits of Breastfeeding

August marks breastfeeding awareness month, and this August, we want to celebrate the special bond breastfeeding creates between moms and babies. As one of California’s largest birthing centers, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) delivers 400-500 babies per month, and we recognize the essential benefits breastfeeding brings to both moms and their babies.

As we discuss all the important advantages of breastfeeding, we also understand and respect the many choices mothers have when it comes to feeding their babies. Whatever decision mothers make, PVHMC is committed to supporting them. By educating, supporting and encouraging mothers, we hope to help make their breastfeeding journey smooth and memorable.

What benefits does breastfeeding provide to baby?

Breastfeeding offers babies irreplaceable benefits, including:

  • Decreased risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome)
  • Decreased risk of asthma and gastrointestinal infection
  • Decreased risk of chronic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes
  • Decreased risk of ear infections
  • Breastmilk has many nutritional benefits that babies easily absorb compared to formula. The nutrients in breast milk help support the baby’s growth and development.
  • Breastmilk shares antibodies from the mother to their baby, which helps strengthen the baby’s immune system.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for at least six months and continued breastfeeding along with other sources of nutrition (such as formula and foods) for up to two years.

What benefits does breastfeeding provide to mom?

Mothers receive plenty of benefits from breastfeeding as well. Understanding these benefits may encourage moms who are hesitant about breastfeeding. Some of the overall benefits can include:

  • Weight loss as the uterus returns to a pre-pregnant state faster
  • Decreased risk of postpartum depression
  • Decreased risk of ovarian and breast cancer
  • Decreased risk of Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure

By acknowledging these benefits, we hope to encourage new moms to take proactive steps in educating themselves and seeking support to ensure a successful and meaningful breastfeeding journey.
