Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns “A-F” grades to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
When Yvette Wojtasiak, a local nurse and lactation consultant was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of cancer, there was no question of where she would receive her care. From diagnosis, gene testing, chemotherapy, to her double mastectomy, Yvette received her full course of treatment at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.
“When patients like Yvette are faced with a serious health condition, they need to be reassured that they have chosen the best medical facility for care,” said Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center President and CEO Richard E. Yochum, FACHE. “Earning this “A” grade is based upon the dedication of our entire organization to provide the highest standards in patient-centered care. From our doctors, nurses, technicians, staff to administration, each person plays an integral role in implementing industry best practices while providing compassionate care that makes a difference in the lives we serve.”
Pomona Valley Hospital has earned an ‘A’ grade from the Leapfrog Group three times in a row.
“A cancer diagnosis is delicate and requires medical teams across different specialties to work in coordination to help our patients achieve good health,” says Dr. Swarna Chanduri, M.D., medical oncologist at the Robert & Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center at PVHMC. “I’m pleased with how well Yvette’s doing two years after her cancer diagnosis and proud to work with colleagues who share the same vision and commitment to excellence in patient care.”
“There were so many amazing people involved in my care, from my doctors to the nurse navigator, to my lymphedema physical therapist and so many more,” said Yvette Wojtasiak. “From the moment my cancer journey started, my medical team helped me make informed decisions and provided compassionate care.”
“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to your patients and their families, and your whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
