Weight Loss Surgery Gives a Local Father a Second Chance at Being Active Again

Daniel Luevano, 37, from Redlands, had reached 400 pounds for the first time in his life. As a truck driver, he was experiencing pain in his ankles. The father of seven children knew that he needed to make a drastic change to improve his health.

After careful consideration, Daniel decided to undergo bariatric surgery with Dr. Judy Wang at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center on May 3rd.

Recognizing the risks associated with his weight, Daniel was motivated to pursue this path for the sake of his children and himself.

Weight-loss surgery eligibility depends on several factors, including body mass index (BMI) and associated health conditions. Historically, candidates had to have a BMI of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea to qualify for bariatric surgery.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least one in five adults (20%) in each U.S. state is living with obesity.

“Obesity is a complex disease and it can pose significant health risks, including diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and sleep disorders,” said Dr. Judy Wang, bariatric surgeon at PVHMC. “Bariatric surgery and lifestyle change together can mitigating these risks, leading to improved overall health and enhanced longevity for our patients.”

The pre-operative process prepared him well, enabling him to adopt healthier eating habits and start exercising. Surprisingly, he found the liquid diet before surgery easier than anticipated due to his commitment to change.

On the day of the surgery, everything went smoothly. Along with the bariatric procedure, Dr. Wang addressed a hernia, and Daniel woke up feeling fine, ready to embrace his new journey. The support from the staff at PVHMC was instrumental; they provided clear guidance on post-surgery care and followed up to ensure he was on track.

The results exceeded his expectations; he has lost 116 pounds and experienced a remarkable boost in energy. The pain in his knees and ankles diminished, allowing him to lead a more active life and feel comfortable in his own skin for the first time in years.

“Undergoing bariatric surgery is a big decision that can transform your life,” said Dr. Wang. “Working with patients closely, we take steps together to determine the best course of action and also discuss a post operative plan to ensure patients like Daniel are able to keep the weight off and improve their quality of life.”

Dr. Wang’s attentive care made a lasting impression on Daniel, who appreciated her thorough explanations and regular check-ins. Today, he feels fantastic, actively working out and maintaining a healthier diet. Simple tasks, like tying his shoes, are no longer a struggle, as he no longer runs out of breath.

“For anyone considering bariatric surgery, I encourage them to trust their instincts and not let doubt deter them,” said Daniel. “The adjustment has been good. I’m sticking to the gym and healthier eating, and I genuinely feel better.”

He firmly believes that if someone knows they need a change, they should take that step—it can truly transform their life for the better.
