This year, residents from Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP) had the opportunity to collaborate with Bright Prospect and the Pomona Unified School District for a series of educational workshops aimed at promoting health awareness and inspiring future careers in healthcare.
Topics covered included:
- Hypertension Awareness: the series kicked off with a session on hypertension, where we introduced students to basic blood pressure information and taught them how to measure it. Each student received a blood pressure cuff to monitor their own and their family's health at home.
- Tobacco Risks: in a follow-up workshop, residents discussed the risks of tobacco use and its impact on health, encouraging students to make informed choices and avoid the many dangers of smoking.
- Careers in Healthcare: most recently, they held a session focused on careers in healthcare. Our residents, alongside Johnson Lightfoote, MD, Radiologist, and Daniel Blocker, PhD, LMFT, Behavioral Health Scientist at the FMRP, shared insights into various medical professions, aiming to inspire students and increase minority representation in the healthcare field.
This ongoing collaboration with Bright Prospect and the Pomona Unified School District continues to make a meaningful impact, and they look forward to furthering their efforts to support and empower the next generation of healthcare professionals.
